Alternative Rules for ROLL & WIN

Here are a few alternative rules for our original ROLL & WIN board game.  Click here if you'd like to have a printable version.

1. Optional "House Rules"

As board gaming aficionados know, anything goes!  Here are a few of our favorite house rules that you can adopt in YOUR house:

A. Allow players to complete scorecard hands in any order they like
B. Include even more difficult hands for Potluck round (for example: achieving a 5-of-a-Kind or 6-of-a-Kind would rank higher than a Royal Flush). If you choose to include these more difficult hands, consider awarding players even more bonus points!
C. Shuffle and deal the Power-Up cards to players.
D. Allow players to use unlimited power-up cards during any turn.
E. Use a “playoff” to break ties for any round, so that there is only one winner of each round’s Better Hand Bonus.  Agree on your playoff rule at the start of the game.  For instance, the player who rolls the most Aces with one roll of the dice is the winner.
F. Use the following suit hierarchy to determine the Better Hand Bonus winner for the Royal Flush hands (from most to least powerful):
  • Spades
  • Hearts
  • Diamonds
  • Clubs

     2. Yatzy-Style Rules

Instead of simultaneously proceeding through the scorecard in sequential order to complete each hand, players are free to complete any hand they like, at any time.  For example, on the first turn, Player 1 might achieve a 2-pair, while Player 2 decides to try for a 4-of-a-Kind.  If a player gets a Royal Flush at any point in the game—voilà!—they can fill in the BEST HAND for Straight Flush.  Get another Royal Flush?  There’s your 30 points for the POTLUCK hand!

    3. Head-to-Head Bonus Scoring

If a player gets the correct hand for a round, he/she should record the card faces for the hand in the squares on his/her scorecard and circle the corresponding ‘Match Goal Score’ points.  When the last player has completed the round, the hands that each player recorded are compared, and the player with the highest possible poker hand may circle the ‘Better Hand Bonus’ points.  If two or more players tie for the better hand, those players can circle the Bonus points.

All other rules are the same as the original game!
